As part of their 2008 UK Tour, Salsa Celtica played at The Royal International Pavilion in Llangollen on the 22nd April.

The Royal Pavilion is a large, modern building which is used frequently for live music, but most notably it houses the International Eisteddfod every year.

The show was due to start at 8pm and we arrived just a little after 8pm and the band was already on stage, bang on time.  This was basically a seated event, but the organisers had provided a good sized dancefloor in front of the stage.  We were a group of 5 and as the show had already begun everyone was already seated, and there weren’t 5 seats left together.  We had no intention of sitting down though, so we headed down the side of the seating towards the front to stand and watch.

Initially there didn’t appear to be many other salseros there, but on the band’s second song, we decided to make use of the floor, and suddenly we were joined by some familiar faces and the dancing kicked off in earnest.  After a couple of tracks we were then joined by more of the audience.

The audience itself was very mixed and I’d say it consisted mostly of non-dancers who were just there to enjoy the live music, but that didn’t stop them getting up to dance in whatever style they knew how.  It was great to see so many people up dancing and enjoying themselves, and so many different types of dancing ranging from salsa, celtic and ballroom, to just jigging around.

I have seen Salsa Celtica on many occasions and as usual they were full of energy on stage and never fail to deliver a cracking set.  As this was a mixed audience there was slightly more Celtica than Salsa compared to some of their other gigs that I have seen, but even so, what they do, they do very well.  We would have liked a couple more salsa tracks from a dancing point of view, though the show itself was just as good without them.

There was a break half way through the show when the band was available to sell and sign CDs in the lobby.  They are a very friendly bunch of guys so were also happy to chat to the audience and have photos taken etc which is always nice.

Half an hour later the band came back on for their second set – they did a walk-on through the lobby and onto the dancefloor, and then encouraged the audience to get up with them on the dancefloor before they took to the stage.  They then kicked off the second set with my favourite of their tracks…….. ‘Fuerte’, so I was well chuffed – had almost asked earlier if they did requests :o)

The dancefloor was packed throughout the show and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves and the show immensely.  It was all over far too quickly though – how time flies when you are having fun!!  We managed to get a little time to chat to the band as they were packing their gear away, but it was soon time to head back home.

There are still a few dates left on their UK tour so catch them if you can.  We will most definitely be going to see them again next year.
